It almost always follows one particular scene, the child clinging at the school gate and refusing to let go.

That scene, on its own, is hardly ever the piece of information that decides anything. What does decide is how the rest of the day goes, and what happens as the weeks pass.

The school gate is misleading

The goodbye concentrates all the tension of the morning, which makes it the worst possible thermometer. A child can cry as if the world were ending and be perfectly settled a while later, just as they can walk in without a tear and spend weeks without finding their place inside.

When a child psychologist hears about that scene, they do not stop there. The questions go elsewhere: how the child is at home, whether the process is moving forward even in fits and starts, and whether the distress stays at school or has been spreading into other parts of the day.

The three things we do look at

You do not need a textbook to know when a difficulty stops being a settling-in period. A child psychologist looks at three things, and you can observe all three yourself from home:

Whether it improves as the weeks go by. The calendar is your best ally. If the term moves on and the scene stays exactly the same, we are no longer talking about an adjustment period.

Whether they are still their usual self at home. This is the most important of the three. As long as the child keeps their own way of being on the ground where they feel safe, there is plenty of margin.

Whether the fear sticks to other things. It starts at school and ends up turning up at snack time, at the park or at bedtime. Once it spreads, it is worth looking at.

None of the three is a diagnosis, nor is it meant to be. They are the criteria a child psychologist uses to decide whether there is something to work on or whether all that is needed is time and support.

Booking an appointment is not labelling your child

That is exactly the fear that holds many families back: that walking into a child psychologist’s practice will turn a passing difficulty into a problem with a name. It works the other way round. Putting a name to what is happening to a child takes time and careful listening, to them and to their family, and that work is done precisely so as not to label anyone unnecessarily.

In fact, a good share of first appointments with a child psychologist end in a reassuring conclusion: what you are seeing falls within the expected range. Knowing that for certain, rather than from searching the internet at two in the morning, already justifies the visit.

Parents come into the room too

There are two reactions that come out on their own, and neither helps. One is playing it down: “it is nothing, this happens to everybody”. The other is stretching the goodbye until you are running late, which confirms to the child that going to school must indeed be something dreadful.

Finding the middle ground — taking what they feel seriously without treating it as an emergency — is hard from the inside, especially when you arrive at that same hour already worn out. That is why the work of a child psychologist is not only with the child: it is with whoever walks them in each morning.

A child psychologist in central Málaga

We are the group’s psychology practice, with access to the rest of all the specialities at Semedi Salud whenever a case calls for it. Many families start by talking to the child psychologist on their own, to make sense of what they are seeing before changing anything. From there you decide how to carry on.

At home they are just as always and they only cry going in. Should I wait?

Any child psychologist will tell you that still being their usual self at home is the best of the three signs, so there is plenty of room to wait. Whether that waiting is costing you is another matter, and that can be discussed too.

Do you work with the school as well?

It depends on the case, and the family always decides. What is done and what is not gets talked through first, never over your heads.

Where are you?

In the centre of Málaga.
